Our Interfaith Ceremony

We have planned an interfaith wedding, blending traditions from Catholicism and Judaism, and our ceremony will be concelebrated by a priest and a rabbi. It was our intention to ensure the ceremony is a reflection of our relationship and lay the groundwork for our marriage and future together as husband and wife.

It is incredibly important to us that our friends and family feel part of the celebration, so we wanted to include an overview of key ceremony elements that may not be familiar to all guests.

The Chuppah

The wedding ceremony will take place under the chuppah, a canopy that represents our future home. The chuppah has no walls, representing a home filled with love that is open and welcoming to all.

Readings

We will have loved ones involved in our ceremony through sharing both Catholic and Jewish prayer/scripture that have meaning to us.

Prayers of the Faithful

This is part of a Catholic mass where a series of requests for prayer are read, followed by the response "Lord Hear Our Prayer," allowing everyone to participate in the prayer. The specific prayers you will hear will be written by Maddie and Corey.

Unity Candle

This tradition symbolizes the uniting of two families into one. Our moms will light individual candles to represent our two families, and will then use those candles to light one candle together.

Breaking the Glass

The breaking of the glass marks the end of the ceremony, but the beginning of the celebration of our marriage. Traditionally, this symbolizes the destruction of the ancient temple in Jerusalem, as well as the fragility of human life. Even in the happiest times, there may also be sorrow. As life and marriage are fragile, they should be treasured and treated with great care, love, and respect. For us, the shattering of this glass also symbolizes the breaking down of barriers between people of different cultures and faiths. Once Corey breaks the glass - be ready to yell "Mazel Tov!"
